Kimberley Reading Recovery
Improving children’s literacy skills through Reading Recovery
Waardi is committed to the Kimberley Reading Recovery initiative that, since 2006, has been provided to 890 children. Reading Recovery offers intensive individual teaching to children who are struggling with reading and writing to help them reach their full potential.
The initiative came under Waardi’s umbrella in 2013 upon signing of the Browse LNG Precinct Project Agreement. Under the Agreement, Woodside committed funding to Reading Recovery.
Guumbarr holds Reading Recovery funding for Waardi to deliver the initiative. Waardi ensures that Reading Recovery is delivered across the Kimberley. 17 Kimberley schools received assistance in 2013, 14 in 2014, 9 in 2015 and 5 in 2016.
Due to changed circumstances both the Waardi and Guumbarr Board of Directors resolved not to fund Reading Recovery from 2017 onwards.
Woodside committed funding because it had seen a compelling need and a viable solution.
“Waardi is extremely pleased to be managing Reading Recovery for Kimberley schools. It gives young children real results that influence their learning for life. As well, the positive impacts on their self-esteem lead to better behaviour.” (Warren Greatorex, former Waardi Director and Chairperson).
